A wildebeest herd spread out beneath an acacia

Tanzania

The most expensive mistake here is booking "the Serengeti"

It is roughly the size of Northern Ireland. Where the herds are in February is several hundred kilometres from where they are in August, and a camp chosen from a photograph in the wrong sector for your dates can be excellent with nothing much happening around it.

The key fact

Where the herds usually are

Patterns rather than promises — wildlife does not read calendars, and these shift by weeks from year to year.

MonthUsuallyStay in
December – MarchThe southern plains, calving from about FebruarySouthern Serengeti / Ndutu
April – MayMoving north and west through the centreCentral Serengeti
June – JulyThe western corridor, moving northCentral or western
July – OctoberThe north, and the Mara River crossingsNorthern Serengeti
NovemberReturning south through the centreCentral Serengeti

Say this to any specialist: "We travel in [month] — which sector should we be in, and is the camp you have proposed actually there?" A good answer names the sector. A bad one talks about the camp.

The other key fact

Forty minutes from the Serengeti to the Indian Ocean

This is the strongest structural argument for Tanzania as a honeymoon, and it is a logistics point rather than a romantic one.

A light aircraft from the Serengeti airstrips puts you on Zanzibar in about forty minutes. No day lost to a transfer, no routing back through a capital, and a second week that begins the same afternoon the first one ends — which is precisely the shape a honeymoon wants.

  • The easiest bush-to-beach join in East Africa
  • Bush first, coast second — the sleep debt gets repaid at the end
  • Four coasts on Zanzibar, and the differences are not cosmetic
  • Four or five beach nights is right; three feels like arriving and leaving

The Tanzania Honeymoon Guide

Which part of the Serengeti your month points at, what the Crater is worth, and how the four Zanzibar coasts actually differ.

  • The Serengeti is not one place
  • Where the herds are, month by month
  • The three Serengeti regions compared
  • Ngorongoro: worth a day, not a stay
  • The southern and western parks
  • Zanzibar: four coasts, four different weeks
  • Routes at seven, ten and fourteen nights
  • What it costs, and where the money goes
  • A worksheet

Before you ask

What couples ask about Tanzania

Will we see a river crossing?

Possibly, if you are in the northern Serengeti between roughly July and October and you give it several days. Nobody can promise one.

Crossings happen when the herds decide, not when visitors are watching. Multiple days in the right sector improve the odds considerably; a single day is a lottery ticket. Any site that guarantees one is selling.

Is the Ngorongoro Crater worth it?

Yes, for one full day. There is nothing else like it — a contained caldera with a largely resident population you descend into.

It is also heavily visited and that cannot be fixed; it is a finite space with a road into it. Treat it as a day rather than a stay: one night on the rim, down early, and on.

Tanzania or Kenya?

Tanzania for scale, the Crater and the February calving — and for the forty-minute hop to Zanzibar, which is the easiest beach join in the region.

Kenya for more variety in shorter distances, the conservancy system that permits walking and night drives, and a lower cost for a comparable camp.

How many nights on Zanzibar?

Four or five. Three feels like arriving and leaving; beyond five you want doing nothing to be genuinely the plan — which, after a safari, it sometimes is.

Which coast matters more than how long. Tide and seaweed vary enormously over twenty miles.

Who actually arranges my safari?

This site is a planning guide. When you send an enquiry it goes to Nomad Africa, our partner travel agency in Kenya, who prepare your itinerary and quote and handle the booking, the payments and you on the ground.

You deal with one team from the first email to the airport transfer home.

All the questions

Start planning

Tell us your month and we will name the sector

The month decides which part of the Serengeti you should be in, and that decides the camps. Everything else follows.

Our Tanzania specialist replies within 24 hours with the sector, named camps in it, and an itemised price.

  • The Serengeti sector that matches your dates, named and explained
  • An honest note on crossing odds if that is what you are after
  • The Zanzibar coast that suits your month, with the tide caveat
  • No deposit to see a plan, and no obligation at any point
